Client Services RESOURCE FACILITATING Provides support, guidance, resource information, informal evaluation & referrals, advocacy and connection with other agencies by an accredited intake worker.Our clients include children, teenagers, adults or the families of people who are experiencing learning disabilities or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition to this, we service educators, health care workers as well as other professionals. Appointments can be made by calling the LDA YR office. Interviews are up to one hour in length and are a valuable source in determining plans of action. ADVOCACY Self Advocacy:- Empowerment of individuals and groups is the goal of this service. Individual interviews are given to review information provided and to develop a self advocacy plan.Instructed Advocacy:- Advocate is available to speak on behalf of the client. Advocate may attend meetings and act upon the instructions of the client. Consultation, planning and follow-up meetings are provided. PARENT SUPPORT GROUP Provides a forum for problem sharing and problem solving for parents of children with LD and ADHD. Forges a close alliance among parents with similar needs and concerns. Offers emotional and information support as well as coping strategies. Occasional seminars by professionals from within the community and by our own resource staff.Group meets once a month. Click here to learn more about the parenting group program ADULT SELF SUPPORT GROUP This group allows adults with learning disabilities to express their feelings openly and comfortably. Participants also learn strategies for dealing with their learning disability, building self esteem and asking questions and seeking the opinions of others. The support group helps to build a sense of community among adults with learning disabilities so that participants become aware that many other people share their concerns and challenges.Group meets once a month on Tuesday. Click here to learn more about the adult support program SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM (8 WEEKS) Offered to children ages 5-16. Participants are divided into three age appropriate groups of up to eight children. Program assists in the development of social skills and social problem solving strategies. Helps to promote self esteem and self confidence. Meets every Monday evening and possibly Thursday evenings.TRAINING FOR CLIENTS AND PROFESSIONALS EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Trains parents to become effective caregivers and mediators for their children by providing information regarding their rights and responsibilities. Provides parents with support on how to become members of the program planning and treatment team for their children and how to encourage their children by providing them with the knowledge and skills to achieve their potential. Trains consumers on how to protect their best interests.COMMUNITY SUPPORT COMMUNITY/INTERAGENCY NETWORK Ongoing networking and information sharing with other service agencies on a continuing or as needed basis. Community planning for LD and ADHD.OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN MARKHAM, GEORGINA AND VAUGHAN To increase awareness of learning disabilities in York Region and to provide counseling services and support to families and individuals throughout these communities.Markham and Vaughan In the Markham and Vaughan Neighbourhood Resource Centres, a library shelf of resource material is available for members to borrow. Services provided through these offices could be presentations, workshops, individual support, support groups, resourcing, advocacy, and attending IPRCs, as requested. Georgina Resource services for Georgina are provided on a needs basis. Workshops can be held on a needs basis. |
